  • International Symposium on Novel and Emerging Tobacco and Nicotine Products and Tobacco Control

    International Symposium on Novel and Emerging Tobacco and Nicotine Products and Tobacco Control was held online by Green Crescent on May 30, 2023. Participating in the symposium were 17 researchers from 11 countries, including notable names from such institutions as the World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Institute for Research and Development (Utrip), University of California, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa and American University of Beirut.
    Prof. Mücahit Öztürk delivered the opening speech at the symposium, which was held to provide the opportunity for the international community to share knowledge and best practices as well as to constitute new frameworks with scientific and evidence-based approaches on tobacco addiction. The symposium, followed by over 1,000 participants, focused on 5 main themes:

    • Effects of novel and emerging tobacco and nicotine products on public health

    • The trends and patterns regarding the use of novel and emerging tobacco and nicotine products in the population, and the factors affecting their incidence and prevalence

    • Current practices and research methods in the struggle against tobacco addiction with a focus on the harms of novel and emerging tobacco and nicotine products

    • Prevention, intervention and advocacy efforts against novel and emerging nicotine and tobacco products; emerging risks and hazards

    • Innovative policy, action plan and intervention program proposals in the struggle against novel and emerging nicotine and tobacco products

    Attended by experts from such countries as the United States, Denmark, Lebanon, Slovenia, Malaysia, Brazil, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sudan and Zimbabwe new risks and dangers related to tobacco addiction, health benefits of smoking cessation, global developments in the prevention of tobacco addiction, latest scientific developments on harms of novel tobacco and nicotine products with the international community within the scope of struggle against tobacco addiction and enable the creation of scientific and evidence-based novel and effective approaches.

    The keynote speakers at the symposium were President of the Turkish Green Crescent Society Prof. Mücahit Öztürk; Board Member of the Turkish Green Crescent Society Dr. Esra Albayrak and Founding Director of University of California Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education Prof. Stanton Glantz.
